Employee Main Menu > VPN/Remote Instructions

**Requires Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1

If you are wanting to connect to our network remotely in order to access work files and email, you will need to have our VPN client installed. Once connected, you are essentially working from our “internet”, so please be mindful of your browsing when connected. When you are done working, just click the ‘disconnect’ button on the VPN client and it will disconnect you from our network and our internet, and at that point you are back to using your own connection again.

Please note there is a difference between VPN and remote. They are two different things that work together to allow a user to connect and work remotely.

The VPN client establishes a virtual connection to our domain, as if you were physically connected, and the remote simply allows you, once connected, to log in to Server02 which is what most refer to as “remote”, to access files and email.

Keep in mind that “remote desktop” will not work unless a VPN connection is established.

1. Download the SonicWall VPN Client

(Select either 32-biit or 64-bit download, depending on your system. If you don’t know, click here for instructions. Or you can perform a keyboard shortcut with WINDOWS KEY + PAUSE/BREAK and look for “System Type”.)

2. Install the VPN client by opening or running the installation you just downloaded

(Follow the instructions and accept default installation settings)

3. Download the VPN configuration file

4. Extract the files, run the CONFIGURE_VPN batch file inside

(You can extract them to any location, such as your desktop, using drag and drop or the “Extract All” button at the top toolbar)

5. Click “enable” on the VPN client window, if it does not automatically enable itself.

6. It will prompt you for a username and password. This is your domain login, the same username/password you would use to sign into remote.

(Example: John Smith username would be smithj, and the password assigned to him from the administrator)

7. Open Remote Desktop on your PC.

(The easiest way to find it is to perform a search for “remote desktop”.)

8. Expand the “Options” button in the bottom left corner.
9. Enter your domain username and password, the domain prefix IS needed here.

( For the Computer field, put in: Server02 )

For your username, you need the davidsonhome prefix, like this: davidsonhome\smithj

Please make sure to use the exact prefix as it appears. The above example is verbatim, make sure to use the correct slash, the BACK slash above the ENTER key – not forward slash which is next to SHIFT.

10. Accept the certificate warning.

(CHECK “Don’t ask me again…” checkbox and click “Yes”.)
